The Importance of Water for Health
On March 22nd every year, World Water Day helps us bring focus to the importance of water in our everyday lives. Water is crucial to all life on our planet, and as important as it is to the health of our ecosystems, it’s extremely important for the health of our bodies too.
The majority of our bodies are made up of water — approximately 60 per cent! So you can imagine how much water helps the overall function of our body; we use water in our cells, organs and tissues. And as much water as we use, we lose too. When we breathe, sweat or digest food, we are losing some of that water, which is why hydrating is so crucial.
“Drink more water” is timeless advice because it really is true! Just look at all the crucial functions in our bodies and overall health that rely on water:
Water works to regulate our body’s temperature and prevent us from getting too high or too low.
Being hydrated helps to keep our tissues, blood, bones and brain moist, which is very important for these sensitive areas.
Water helps protect our spinal cord by acting as a lubricant for our joints.
A proper water intake will actually help your body remove harmful waste. Your kidneys, intestines and liver rely on water to flush out waste.
As we mentioned above, your body loses fluids when you sweat or even when you come down with a high fever. When we lose fluids, we need to replenish them so our body can restore its hydration level. Additional water intake is helpful when you suffer from bladder or urinary tract infections, if you’re pregnant or when you are nursing. You also want to drink enough water to prevent yourself from being dehydrated, which can lead to health risks.
The digestion of our food starts with saliva, which is rooted in water. The enzymes in our saliva help to break down food and dissolve nutrients.
That’s a lot of reasons to maintain an adequate water intake every day, but how much do you really need to drink? This can vary on the person, but always having water on hand, allows you to drink every time you are thirsty. A simple test for your hydration levels, is if your urine is clear, you are properly hydrated.
